Democrats in the General Assembly praised Allen’s ruling. Del. Jennifer McClellan, D-Richmond, said the U.S. Constitution that Allen upheld over Virginia’s document “was not designed to enshrine discrimination based on who you are and who you choose to love. That’s what a majority of Americans are starting to recognize.”

When Virginia lawmakers tasked animal control officers with killing any dog caught injuring or slaying poultry, they were looking for a solution to a decidedly rural problem. But now that more people in urban areas are starting to keep chickens, too, it’s time for a change, Del. Jennifer McClellan said today.


Human trafficking is a multibillion dollar enterprise in which traffickers use force, intimidation, fraud or coercion to make their victims provide commercial sex, labor or services against their will. Due to the hidden nature of the crime, it is difficult to accurately track the number of cases. Estimates from the U.S. State Department and the International Labor Organization indicate more than 20 million people worldwide are victims of some kind of trafficking, with hundreds of thousands of victims here in the United States.
